
Observational evidence from existing retrofitting interventions
Retrofitting homes to improve energy efficiency can change the indoor temperature, but its effects on indoor air quality (such as particulate matter), mould, and damp are less well understood. It is important to have a full understanding of the potential impact of retrofits on indoor air quality alongside temperature because they can affect our physical and mental health.
Small air pollution and temperature monitors are installed in real homes undergoing retrofit. These sensors continuously collect data over time, helping us understand how the indoor air quality, temperature, humidity, and health outcomes change before, during, and after retrofit works.
We are working with project partners delivering major retrofit programmes across the West Midlands and beyond. By collecting real-world evidence at scale, this project will support healthier, more energy-efficient homes.
